Internal medicine physician (AKA internist): Noun. “A personal physician who provides long-term, comprehensive care (managing both common and complex illness) of adolescents, adults, and the elderly. Internists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, infections, and diseases affecting the circulatory, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, nervous, endocrine, and vascular systems. They are trained in primary care, which incorporates an understanding of disease prevention, wellness, and mental health.”
